People, Places, Music, Books, Events, etc. we enjoy and would like to share with you

Some musicians and good folks we met at Augusta Heritage Workshops this summer:

  • Notorious -  (Larry Unger & Eden MacAdam-Somer) played really hot dance music for tango class and contra dances.
  • Crowfoot - a great young dance band that includes Canadian flutist/composer Nick Williams played for dances and classes.
  • Nils Fredland - called some great dances, added his accordian to the band's sound, and taught a great acapella singing class.
  • Cis Hinkle - caller and fearless leader of Augusta Dance Week
  • Flawn Williams - taught a very informative class in sound reinforcement, led some killer singing sessions (I think he knows every doo-wop sing ever written!)

Other artists we enjoyed spending time with this summer:

  • Erynn Marshall - wonderful old-time fiddler from Canada, who we met a couple of years ago at Clifftop, came to Pittsburgh and did a house concert at our house, accompanied by...
  • Chris Coole - banjo and guitar man, and Arnie Naiman, who also plays banjo and a pretty mean fiddle himself.
  • Wendell Dobbs - historical flutist, music professor and participant in the Timber Flute Festival in Elkins, WV
  • Grey Larsen - flutist, presented a workshop on Irish music at the Timber Fest
  • Ron Warren - Native American flutist, storyteller did a wonderful presentation at the Timber Flute Fest. Also with him was vocalist, Janice, and local flutist Carl, who presented the Elkins Flute Circle
  • Cheick Hamala Diabaté - griot, ngoni player and singer from Guinea, West Africa performed with Balafon, West African dance troupe from Washington D.C.
  • Mama Kadiatou - dancer and singer from West Africa, founder of Balafon has been leading dance classes and performances in Pittsburgh that Daphne has been privileged to participate in.
  • Kate Long, Ginny Hawker, Kay Justice, and Tina Liza Jones sang in some great song circles at Clifftop
  • Wayne Erbsen - played mandolin and sang at Clifftop sessions. Check out his books on Appalachian culture and songs
  • John Lilly - at the singing tent in Glenville, WV gave us a taste of his inimitable yodeling style and lots of great old-time songs.
  • Rob Yard - flute maker and flutist visited us with his family during their stint at the Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh and we visited them at their "summer home" at the Pittsburgh Renaissance Faire
